1 Introduction Numerous deaths associated with extreme heat have been recorded in cities, and estimates are that by 2070, Urban Heat risk is projected to affect 1.6 billion urban residents (WEF 2022). The Urban Heat Island effect, intensified by rapid urbanization and climate change, elevates urban temperatures and exacerbates health risks (Kumar 2021).

Abstract Exacerbated by climate change, the increasing urban heat is a silent disaster especially affecting vulnerable communities representing a city’s weakest part. To assess vulnerabilities and understand the local urban heat experiences, this study employed reconnaissance and resident surveys across diverse vulnerable community types (formal and informal settlements) in Xi’an, China.
