Aquatic environment drives the emergence of cell wall-deficient dormant forms in Listeria - Nature Communications
Abstract Stressed bacteria can enter a dormant viable but non-culturable (VBNC) state. VBNC pathogens pose an increased health risk as they are undetectable by growth-based techniques and can wake up back into a virulent state. Although widespread in bacteria, the mechanisms governing this phenotypic switch remain elusive. Here, we investigate the VBNC state transition in the human pathogen Listeria monocytogenes.
Quantification of membrane fluidity in bacteria using TIR-FCS
Abstract Plasma membrane fluidity is an important phenotypic feature that regulates the diffusion, function, and folding of transmembrane and membrane-associated proteins. In bacterial cells, variations in membrane fluidity are known to affect respiration, transport, and antibiotic resistance. Membrane fluidity must therefore be tightly regulated to adapt to environmental variations and stresses such as temperature fluctuations or osmotic shocks.
Transient inhibition of cell division in competent pneumococcal cells results from deceleration of the septal peptidoglycan complex
Abstract Bacterial cells are known to produce inhibitors of cell division in response to stress responses and developmental programs. Knowledge of the underlying molecular mechanisms remains however largely limited. In this study, we investigated the mechanism of transient cell division inhibition observed during the development of competence for transformation in the human pathogen Streptococcus pneumoniae.
