In 'The Westies,' Chris Brancato Expands His 'Scumbag Universe' (Again)
(Ask a Showrunner) NEW YORK -- "I consider myself in charge of the scumbag universe," writer Chris Brancato said with a laugh last week over coffee. "Any criminal group of any sort that emanates out of New York is fair game for me to try to fictionalize." Strictly speaking, he was selling himself short. For the past few decades, his scumbags have also come from Medellín, Colombia ("Narcos"); Guadalajara, Mexico ("Narcos: Mexico"); and Miami ("Hotel Cocaine"), among other places.

'Your Friends & Neighbors' Wants to Have Its Porsche and Judge It Too
(Ask a Showrunner) This interview contains spoilers for the Season 2 finale of "Your Friends & Neighbors." It isn't easy, it seems, being middle-aged and single in Westchester County, where many of New York's richest and most powerful people settle to build outwardly ideal suburban lives. You might wind up moving back to the city, as writer Jonathan Tropper eventually did once his commitments as a divorced Westchester dad allowed.

36 Hours to Air: Inside the Scramble to Film 'SNL' Shorts
On a Friday morning in April, a dozen "Saturday Night Live" cast members and that week's host, Colman Domingo, arrived at a New York City soundstage with less than a day to film two very different short videos, each with its own set, cast, crew and technical challenges. Every short is its own new mini-production, and every working week the crew effectively starts from scratch, turning the writers' ideas into television in only a few days.

In ‘Neighbors,’ the Golden Rule Is ‘Get Off My Lawn’ Original
The Robert Frost line “Good fences make good neighbors,” from his 1914 poem “Mending Wall,” was almost certainly not meant to be taken at face value, despite attempts to co-opt it since. Often lost is the narrator’s mistrust toward that motto’s isolationist logic. Still the narrator in the poem had it relatively easy. His neighbor had not threatened to throw a bucket of acid on his face.

‘Pluribus’ Is a Singular Vision of a Tedious Utopia
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Something about the New Mexico desert seems to invite big thoughts. The sky is immense and the sun feels close. Deep time is on constant display in ribbons of exposed granite and piles of volcanic black basalt. As the home of Roswell, it is a mecca for UFO conspiracy theorists, but at thousands of feet above sea level, it is also a little thin on oxygen.

With The Studio, Canadian comedy duo Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg grow up - sort of
LOS ANGELES – Amoeba Records in Hollywood Boulevard is not the best place for someone of Seth Rogen’s visibility to shop hassle-free. Located just blocks from TCL Chinese Theatre, right by Dr Phil’s and Dr Oz’s stars on the Walk of Fame, there may be few places worse. But when the actor and film-maker was not being interrupted by his admiring bro-fans, Amoeba was, however, a perfect place to dig through hundreds of vinyl soundtracks.
Jon Hamm Finds His Way Back to the Hilltop
As we ascended the trail into Griffith Park, Jon Hamm gazed up at the scrubby ridge to our left. From our perspective, the ridgeline traced a clean horizon, uninterrupted by cell towers or midcentury modern palaces. He nodded toward a man sitting up there alone. “See that dude sitting on the point there?” he asked. I looked: The dude could have been meditating or having a Don Draper moment, dreaming up the next big Coca-Cola campaign.

But he worked hard, meanwhile, not to be typecast. He turned down roles that seemed too Draper-like and avoided working with other "Mad Men" alumni. He did thrillers ("Baby Driver," "Beirut"). He did more comedy, a lot of it ("Confess, Fletch," "30 Rock," "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt"). His attempts to become a go-to leading man in the movies met with middling box-office success. "Does that say that the audience doesn't want to see me in movies?" he said. "I don't know; I don't think so.
