Workplace Investigations: Five Key Takeaways (Part Three)
The employment law landscape is increasingly proactive, not reactive We are seeing increased stakeholder scrutiny on workplace issues (including investigations), both externally and from the workforce itself. With a greater focus on workplace culture, governance and speak up, organisations need to demonstrate how they are protecting their people, managing their risk and appropriately responding to concerns raised.
Five Key Takeaways (Part Three)- Workplace Investigations

Suddenly, employers are dealing with media attention, social media commentary, employee concerns and potentially serious reputational risk – all while trying to conduct a fair and effective investigation. Workplace Investigations: Five Key Takeaways (Part Two)
Privilege, privilege, privilege There is no such thing as a quick précis in relation to privilege, given it is a notoriously complex area. However, the brief point to be made here is that at the start of every investigation, it is worth spending some time thinking about whether it applies, and/or whether you want/need it to. The starting point for both questions is no.

Sexual Harassment Training Menu -UK September 2024
The new mandatory duty to take "reasonable steps" to prevent sexual harassment in the workplace will come into force in October, which means the countdown is on for employers. Come 26 October, you have either taken the reasonable steps required or you have not, and if you have not, you are immediately exposed. Acting now, or, as a minimum, being seen to think now about whether you need to act, is a likely prerequisite of compliance with this new duty.

New Duty on Employers to Prevent Sexual Harassment at Work in the UK – A Relatively Informal Guide | Publications | Insights & Events | Squire Patton Boggs
Why won’t someone just tell us what we need to do …? In the previous version of this alert, we predicted that the promised guidance on the new duty to take reasonable steps to prevent sexual harassment in the workplace might not provide much clarity for employers on what they actually need to do to comply with it. Since then, the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) has released, as a consultation, its proposed updates to the Technical Guidance on Sexual Harassment and Harassment at Work.
Healthcare resource utilization and economic burden of multiple sclerosis in Chinese patients: results from a real-world survey - Scientific Reports
Abstract Multiple sclerosis (MS) is uncommon in China and the standard of care is underdeveloped, with limited utilization of disease-modifying treatment (DMT). New Duty on Employers to Prevent Sexual Harassment at Work (UK)
Why doesn't someone tell us what we need to do? It should be a principle of good law, you would think, that you know what you have to do to comply with it. So why, when asked to provide that clarity in advance of the positive duty on employers to take reasonable steps to prevent sexual harassment coming into force in October, has the government refused to do so?

Food for Thought – Can UK Gig Economy Workers Go on Strike?
If there was ever any doubt that Trade Unions target their dates for industrial action to cause maximum inconvenience (think train drivers striking on the day of major sporting events, or binmen striking at Christmas), then Deliveroo and other food delivery company drivers striking on Valentines Day surely put that to bed. Scant consolation for couples forced to head to the kitchen and do it themselves instead of reaching for the take-away menu for their romantic diner a deux.

Navigating the Road to T+1: Overcoming Bottlenecks for Efficient Settlement | The Financial Technologist
Winston Churchill’s infamous words “now this is not the end, it is not even the beginning of the end, but it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning,” immediately spring to mind when it comes to the May 24 deadline for T+1. The long-awaited confirmed go live date is very much the start of a long operational journey, and market participants need to come to terms with the fact that full compliance by this date is not necessarily going to happen.
Association of Childhood and Midlife Neighborhood Socioeconomic Position With Cognitive Decline
Key Points Question Is neighborhood socioeconomic position (nSEP) associated with cognitive decline? Findings In this longitudinal cohort study of 5711 men and women, the rate of cognitive decline from midlife to older adulthood decreased by 9.2% with each 1-SD increase in childhood nSEP. No associations of midlife nSEP with cognitive decline were observed. Meaning This study suggests that early childhood experiences are associated with cognitive trajectories in adulthood.
Hearing intervention versus health education control to reduce cognitive decline in older adults with hearing loss in the USA (ACHIEVE): a multicentre, randomised controlled trial

The ACHIEVE study is a multicentre, parallel-group, unmasked, randomised controlled trial of adults aged 70–84 years with untreated hearing loss and without substantial cognitive impairment that took place at four community study sites across the USA.

Regulation & compliance: How lobbyists have hindered best execution
The open-endedness of MiFID I’s language turned Europe’s markets into an uneven playing field, with equity trading fragmented across all sorts of venues, some lit and some dark, some broker-run and some exchange-run. Venues could avoid regulation by structuring themselves so they did not fall into the defined categories of multilateral trading facility (MTF), regulated market or systematic internaliser. Consequently, they had no obligation to report their trading or market participants.
