INTRODUCTION Conservation efforts are often location specific (Stewart et al., 2013), presenting challenges for managing migratory species that traverse vast distances. Shorebirds (Charadriiformes, suborder Charadrii) exemplify these challenges; many travel thousands of kilometers biannually across continents and oceans (e.g., Gill et al., 2009). The flocking behavior of shorebirds gives the illusion of abundance, leading to shifting baselines (Pauly, 1995) and masking major population declines.
