A.V. Eichenbaum’s Biography

Born in San Jose, California, A.V. Eichenbaum has been part of the workforce since the age of 7, when they worked odd jobs for their grandparents' various businesses.

Eichenbaum started their journalism career at The Gavilan Press in 2009, age 14, working the local news and politics beat, and working both in front of and behind the camera covering sports for Gilroy's Channel 19.

During the remainder of their high school career, Eichenbaum worked as a freelance writer and door-to-door security system sales associate while also running a multimedia outreach program at their high school and leading a successful campaign to address bullying at Gilroy High, designing and implementing an anti-bullying code that is still used today.

In college, Eichenbaum worked at the Pulitzer Prize-winning Register-Pajaronian as an intern & junior reporter where they covered crime, protests, and efforts to save the area's wetlands. They also wrote obituaries and reviews of books by local authors. At the same time, they were an editor, podcaster, and reporter for The Cabrillo Voice covering everything from board meetings to campus celebrities and alleged assaults on student politicians by motorcycle clubs.

Eichenbaum continued to work odd jobs and freelance. They focused on their performing career -- writing plays and producing shows, acting, modelling, and appearing in some commercials, PSAs, and short films before moving to Seattle, WA in 2017.

In Seattle, while working in the heart of Eastlake at a longstanding shipping hub and mailing store, they worked with independent filmmakers writing screenplays. They also debuted a surrealist comedy podcast in association with Davis Banta of Your Friends are Here. In 2019, Eichenbaum picked up writing op-eds for the quarterly publication The Eastlake News.

In late 2020, Eichenbaum was hired by the SGN as a part-time writer, not making their debut at the paper until January 2021. By March of 2021, they were promoted to Associate Editor, and then Managing Editor by August.

After long-time SGN Editor-in-Chief George Bakan's passing, they took on the mantle from 2021 - 2023. They had the privilege of guiding the paper into the 21st century alongside publisher Angela Cragin while maintaining ties to its activist roots. Eichenbaum was also the producer and cohost for the SGN's podcast Radio SGN.

In their spare time, Eichenbaum works on music projects The Weeping Dreams and Lavender_Tones, writes short horror stories, paints, and is a Dungeon Master for friends and family.
