Anti-choking or airway clearance devices have grown in popularity in recent years, with success stories gaining traction on social media. The devices are placed over a choking victim’s nose and mouth to create suction.

While the Heimlich maneuver has been a go-to solution for choking for half-a-century, in the last decade anti-choking or airway clearance devices have grown in popularity, thanks in part to news reports and social media. Airway clearance devices gained national attention in 2021 after a stranger used a LifeVac device to save a 10-month-old choking at a South Carolina restaurant.

Parent advocacy group leader voices concerns about new public school calendar

City parents are raising concerns over next year’s public school calendar, which delays classes until the second week of September. The first day of school this fall will be Thursday, Sept. 10, extending this year’s summer break to approximately 11 weeks, which is up from about nine weeks last year. Yiatin Chu, co-president of Parent Leaders for Accelerated Curriculum and Education, joined “The Rush Hour” on Thursday to talk about the new calendar.
