Genetic architecture of sugarcane traits in a polyploid genomics framework
Abstract Sugarcane (Saccharum spp.) is a vital sugar and bioenergy crop with an exceptionally complex polyploid genome (10–12 sets of chromosomes). This complexity resulted from nobilization—a historical breeding process involving interspecific hybridization and repeated backcrossing1. However, the extreme ploidy has long impeded efforts to elucidate the genetic basis of its considerable sucrose-storing capacity.
Transcriptome and WGCNA analysis revealed the molecular mechanism of drought resistance in new sugarcane varieties
1 Introduction Abiotic stresses including drought, high salinity, extreme temperatures, and excessive light impair plant growth and development, ultimately reducing crop quality and productivity (Nurrahma et al., 2024; Oyebamiji et al., 2024; Zheng et al., 2021). Field studies on crops including sugarcane, maize, wheat, soybean, and oat show that abiotic stresses can reduce yields by up to 85% (Shabbir et al., 2022; Zhang et al., 2017).

A chromosomal-scale genome assembly of modern cultivated hybrid sugarcane provides insights into origination and evolution - Nature Communications
Abstract Sugarcane is a vital crop with significant economic and industrial value. However, the cultivated sugarcane’s ultra-complex genome still needs to be resolved due to its high ploidy and extensive recombination between the two subgenomes. Here, we generate a chromosomal-scale, haplotype-resolved genome assembly for a hybrid sugarcane cultivar ZZ1.

Metabolites with benzene ring from sugarcane leaf play important role in plant-Spodoptera frugiperda interaction
Abstract Secondary metabolism plays important role in plant growth and development, however, the relationship between secondary metabolism and adaptive plant-insect communication is largely unknown. The present study used sugarcane line highly susceptible to Spodoptera frugiperda and sister line with medium resistance to analyze the role of plant non-volatile organic compounds (NOCs) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in sugarcane-S. frugiperda interaction.

Sea-ice loss amplifies summertime decadal CO2 increase in the western Arctic Ocean
Abstract Rapid climate warming and sea-ice loss have induced major changes in the sea surface partial pressure of CO2 (\(p_{{\mathrm {CO}}_2}\)). However, the long-term trends in the western Arctic Ocean are unknown. Here we show that in 1994–2017, summer \(p_{{\mathrm {CO}}_2}\) in the Canada Basin increased at twice the rate of atmospheric increase. Warming and ice loss in the basin have strengthened the \(p_{{\mathrm {CO}}_2}\) seasonal amplitude, resulting in the rapid decadal increase.
Chesapeake Bay acidification buffered by spatially decoupled carbonate mineral cycling
Abstract Uptake of anthropogenic carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere has acidified the ocean and threatened the health of marine organisms and their ecosystems. In coastal waters, acidification is often enhanced by CO2 and acids produced under high rates of biological respiration. However, less is known about buffering processes that counter coastal acidification in eutrophic and seasonally hypoxic water bodies, such as the Chesapeake Bay.
Development of an efficient vector system for gene knock-out and near in-
We opted to adopt the Agrobacterium-mediated transformation system as a vehicle to deliver CRISPR/Cas9 components into the cell of S. scitamineum. A modified T-DNA vector for S. scitamineum4 was used as the backbone to develop the gene disruption construct pLS-HCas9-Mfa2, in which glyceraldehydes-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH) promoter driven eSpCas9 1.129 and drug selection marker Hph were flanked by the RB and LB arms of the T-DNA.
