Across Minnesota, counties are learning a costly lesson about partnering with Immigration and Customs Enforcement: When the federal government fails to pay its bills on time, local taxpayers are left holding the bag. Freeborn County recently disclosed ICE owes nearly $1.2 million in back payments for housing federal detainees — funds the county had to front from its own budget for months.

As Minnesotans, we value the rule of law and voters’ voices being heard. With last session’s Democratic trifecta, laws were enacted to make peoples’ lives better, such as paid family medical leave, free school lunches, voter protections and more. Despite all the money brought in to support Republican candidates, voters gave us a tie with 67 Republican and 67 DFL House members elected. Shared leadership was agreed to by both sides.
