Permanent regulatory improvements to the methadone treatment system have begun, and more are urgently needed. Overdose rates are higher than ever before due to fentanyl; and opioid use disorder (OUD) with fentanyl is a condition for which methadone may be a particularly effective treatment. The US Opioid Overdose Epidemic In The Post-COVID-19 Era Opioid overdoses remain high and stable since 2021, driven by high-potency synthetic opioids (that is, fentanyl).
