Gut bacterial metabolite imidazole propionate potentiates Alzheimer’s disease pathology
Abstract The gut microbiome modulates metabolic and neurovascular processes implicated in Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (ADRD), but the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Here, we identify the bacterial metabolite imidazole propionate (ImP) as a modifier of ADRD pathology. In a cohort of 1196 cognitively unimpaired adults, higher plasma ImP levels were associated with lower preclinical cognitive scores and biomarkers of ADRD, both cross-sectionally and longitudinally.
Melatonin: A potential nighttime guardian against Alzheimer’s - Molecular Psychiatry
Abstract In the context of the escalating global health challenge posed by Alzheimer’s disease (AD), this comprehensive review considers the potential of melatonin in both preventive and therapeutic capacities. As a naturally occurring hormone and robust antioxidant, accumulating evidence suggests melatonin is a compelling candidate to consider in the context of AD-related pathologies.
The iterative process of fluid biomarker development and validation in Alzheimer's disease
PDF ShareShare Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative dementia for which disease-modifying treatments, likely to be the most effective in early disease stages, are now being developed at a rapid pace.1 AD-related pathologies, key among which are extracellular amyloid beta (Aβ) plaques, intra-neuronal tau tangles, and neurodegeneration, as well as astrocytic and microglial activation, are evident in the brain decades before symptom onset; it is increasingly recognized that...
