1 Introduction At the beginning of Friedrich Staib's academic career in the 1950s, medical mycology was a young discipline in Germany. Systemic mycoses in humans were considered extremely rare. Due to improved treatment options for bacterial infections and the introduction of cytotoxic chemotherapeutics and immunosuppressants, systemic mycoses became increasingly important during his lifetime, particularly with the spread of HIV from 1980 onwards [1].
