Farrell / Times Union archive Open primaries matter in New York because you cannot talk about who gets to vote in a primary without talking about who gets to run in one. New York has created one of the most restrictive election systems in the country. If we had a level playing field, where candidates could reasonably get on the ballot and voters had real choices in November, opening our primaries might not be so important.

All of them are miracles of science and the fulfillment of their parents' hopes and prayers.
