OPINION: Proposed change to how Fairbanks funds construction would be a disaster for taxpayers

On September 10, three members of the Fairbanks North Star Borough Assembly introduced an ordinance that seeks to change who is allowed to build borough schools, roads, and public buildings. It drew little notice, but deserves more – and not only in Fairbanks. Ordinance 2026-25 would amend Title 16 of the borough code to require that every borough construction project estimated above $3.5 million be referred to a five-member review team before the project goes out to bid.

By BARBARA HANEY Sept. 13, 2026 –Ordinance 2026-25 was introduced on Sept. 10 at the Fairbanks North Star Borough Assembly. It would rewrite Title 16 of the borough code to require that every borough construction project over $3.5 million be reviewed for a community workforce agreement, and it declares it borough policy to use such agreements to the fullest extent the law allows. Adopted, it takes effect ninety days later. This is not a question of whether you like organized labor.

OPINION: Fairbanks voters deserve to see their ballots counted – and keep their money home

There is an old and simple idea at the heart of self-governance: citizens should be able to see their votes counted – not trust that a machine counted them correctly or rely on a vendor’s assurance that the software worked as advertised. Voters deserve to actually see it with their own eyes, in their own community, conducted by their neighbors. A citizen petition now circulating in the Fairbanks North Star Borough asks the Assembly to return to hand-counted paper ballots.
