Introduction Chronic kidney disease (CKD) affects more than 10% of the global population, constituting a public health burden with medical and financial implications [1]. CKD is defined by a decreased kidney function with a glomerular filtration rate (GFR) of less than 60 mL/min/1.73 m2 or by kidney damage for more than 3 months [1, 2]. Even mild forms of CKD are associated with adverse clinical outcomes, particularly of a cardiovascular nature [1, 3, 4].
PCSK9 and Cardiovascular Disease in Individuals with Moderately Decreased Kidney Function
Discussion To the best of our knowledge, this is the largest prospective study that has examined PCSK9 concentrations and outcomes in a cohort of high-risk participants with moderate CKD. The main findings are as follows. (1) PCSK9 concentrations are not associated with kidney function parameters, such as eGFR or UACR (except a slight increase in participants with nephrotic-range albuminuria).
