“A Conspiracy of Blackbirds” sounds almost as ominous as a murder of crows, but it is actually the title of a debut collection of poetry published by MoonPath Press, the Tillamook-based publisher dedicated to discovering and lifting up Northwest poets. In this instance, meet Terri Cohlene, who resides in the Olympia, Wash., area now, but has lived on both the wet and the dry sides of Washington state, from Bellingham to Pullman, and many communities in between.

The long days of summer are here, so I’ve checked out some of the trails suggested by outdoor adventurer and trail advisor Eli Boschetto in a new edition of “100 Classic Hikes: Oregon.” This guide is a refresh of a book of the same name first published in 2004. The original was written by trail author Douglas Lorain, who later moved to Montana. But that was one of the first books that Boschetto purchased when he arrived in Portland from California in 2005.

Debut novelist Rachel Hochhauser has hit the jackpot the first time out with “Lady Tremaine.” The Portland-based writer has turned one of the world’s oldest and best-known fairy tales on its ear and come up with a story that is as audacious as it is elegantly woven. In Hochhauser’s revisionary take on “Cinderella,” there’s no pumpkin that turns into a coach, but there are apples – bushels upon bushels of them – that need to be picked, then baked or sauced or turned into cider.
