Tadaima Exhibit and New Nikkei Memorial Sculpture by Miya Sukune By Barbara Mizoguchi NAP Editor-in-Chief Local artist Miya Sukune was busy completing an exhibit for the Museum of History and Industry (MOHAI) in Seattle, Washington and a piece of artwork in Ober Park on Vashon Island. Both are a tribute to the Japanese immigrants and Japanese Americans (JAs) in the area who were forced into incarceration camps by the U.S. government in 1942.

By Nippon Foundation and Barbara Mizoguchi, NAP Editor-in-Chief Nippon Foundation provides opportunities for young Japanese descendants to study in Japan. It is meant for those who have definite plans to promote the understanding between Japan, the applicant’s country of residence, and their local communities. The recruitment period is now through July 31. Individuals applying must be 18 to 35 years old and have recommendations from Japanese descendant organizations.

A few months after her parents moved from Japan to Dallas, Texas for her father’s job, Takahashi’s mother asked if she would be interested in ballet classes. At three years old, Takahashi studied at the Ballet Academy of Texas and performed in The Nutcracker. As a teenager, Takahashi was a recipient of the 2014 Kittie La Pointe Memorial Scholarship provided by the Dance Council of North Texas.
