TO THE EDITOR: I work in a buprenorphine clinic in Greater Boston. I agree with most of Martin and colleagues' (1) observations and suggestions about liberalizing the prescribing of buprenorphine for treatment of opioid dependence. However, I wish that the authors had discussed some disturbing issues that I deal with daily. Many patients request prescriptions for other medications that may be abused—specifically, amphetamine–dextroamphetamine, gabapentin, and alprazolam (2, 3).
