Home for a rest: stem cell niche of the postnatal growth plate
Introduction Longitudinal bone growth is driven by a process called endochondral ossification, in which growing cartilage is gradually remodeled into newly formed bone (Kronenberg 2003). During embryonic development, this process begins with a condensation of mesenchymal stem cells, which differentiate into type II collagen-producing chondrocytes to form a cartilage mold (Hall & Miyake 2000).
