A Naval Advisor in Vietnam
As the Navy-chartered flight descended over the South China Sea, our plane broke through the clouds, and below me I saw Saigon’s Tan Son Nhut airbase. It was June 1971, and I was arriving as the Navy was accelerating its departure from Vietnam. I stepped off the plane into the heat and humidity to begin a one-year tour as a U.S. naval advisor to the Republic of Vietnam Navy (VNN). I was 24 years old and a lieutenant (junior grade) —trung uy in Vietnamese.
