The Missing Genre: Why Political Philosophers Should Be Writing to get Netflix deals
Photo by Thibault Penin on Unsplash Political philosophy has an engagement problem. The genre of sci-fi is an enormously successful and impactful way for the general public to think about metaphysical and moral issues. Star Trek directly influenced the design of iPads, cell phones, and the whole today was prepared to discuss AI because of sci-fi.
Can Substack Save Journalism?
Photo by Ashni on Unsplash This piece was originally commissioned for an online magazine but got killed so I’m posting it here: I used to live in a small city in upstate New York that had unusually contentious school board elections. One candidate knocked on my door and started ranting for thirty minutes about how she was the target of a local conspiracy to tarnish her family’s reputation. Her husband had sat on the school board for a term and was voted out.
Why I Hate how PE is taught in Public Schools
My daughter's middle school PE class has a target of a 10 minute mile. The kids hate it. Maybe 90% of the kids can't hit that target. Also, the teacher doesn’t train the kids, like run them twice a week un-timed, or teach them how to improve their running fitness and endurance. Instead, the class does a timed run maybe once every few weeks. If you hit the target, you get a pass so you don’t have to run it the next time.
