The Watergate Scandal is the Only “Gate” Scandal in History
But try telling that to journalists who apparently can’t stop themselves from using a pretend suffix Barry Lyons · Follow 3 min read · -- Credit: BBC, “That Mitchell and Webb Look” Journalism is replete with idioms and expressions that are too numerous to count: “deep background,” “hatchet job,” “hit piece,” and “above the fold”¹ are just four that are commonly used in the business.

Which “If Not” Do You Mean? The most ambiguous construction in the English language Press enter or click to view image in full size “He’s smart, if not a genius.” What does that mean? Does it mean he’s a smart guy but you wouldn’t call him a genius? Or is it saying that the guy is not just smart but that he’s a genius as well? It’s hard to tell because of the ambiguous nature of the construction. So why not just dispense with if not altogether?

Should Joe Biden Stay in the Race?
There are good arguments for staying - and also for leaving What more can be said about the CNN presidential debate that hasn't been said already? Although the focus has been on Joe Biden's terrible performance, what about the other guy? The Philadelphia Inquirerargues that there is a candidate who should drop out of the race - and it's not Joe Biden. "Biden had a horrible night Thursday. But the debate about the debate is misplaced.
Indiana Jones and His Five Adventures
“Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” is surprisingly great; the problem with CGI; and the real Indiana Jones trilogy “Indiana Jones” is the creation of George Lucas and was conceived as his bid to revisit the action-packed film serials of the 1930s and ’40s. Some film buffs have argued that a more direct influence on Lucas may have been Secret of the Incas, a feature film from 1954.
Don’t Reschedule Cannabis
When a story about marijuana policy appears “above the fold,” as the expression goes, as it recently did in The New York Times, it must mean that some big change is in the offing. As it turns out, the paper isn’t wrong. A potential big change is in the air. Cannabis has always been listed in Schedule I as a “dangerous drug” (alongside heroin, I’ll have you know) within the Controlled Substances Act and that serious discussions are now underway to move cannabis to Schedule III.
X is Elon Musk's New Coke
"I've never been as confident about a decision as I am about the one we're announcing today." That's what David Keough, the president of Coca-Cola, said on April 23, 1985, which was the day the company held a press conference at New York City's Lincoln Center to announce the introduction of the company's "New Coke." Keough's confidence was grounded in some data that indicated consumers would prefer Coca-Cola to be a bit sweeter (like Pepsi).

Science Has Its Beliefs Too
By Barry Lyons It's just that, unlike religious beliefs, they're rational "Evolution is just a theory!" How many times have I seen that said on Twitter? A lot. The irony of the assertion has to do with the writer not realizing that theory has two meanings: in the everyday world of average people where the colloquial use of the word means belief or opinion, and the...
I Have a Peripheral Vision Problem
I’m referring to what characters in movies and television shows don’t see but should It’s long been accepted by audiences that movies and TV shows will take the occasional liberty with reality. From our perspective, as viewers, this is called the willing suspension of disbelief. A fistfight?
Kamala Harris and the Apostrophe S
Which is it: “Harris’ record” or “Harris’s record”? The answer is obvious We’re all pleased—well, those of us of a certain political persuasion are pleased — that Vice President Joe Biden picked Senator Kamala Harris as his running mate. First off, for those of you who don’t know, the California senator’s given name is pronounced “calm-a-la,” though some have argued that it’s “comma-la.” I prefer “calm-a-la,” which everyone seems to use anyway without any complaint from her. Fine.

Words and Phrases That Annoy Me
Let’s see a show of hands. How many of you get annoyed when you see a sign that reads “10 items or less”? How many of you are distinctly not amused by “apple’s for sale”? And how many of you want to correct people who say Crackerjacks because the product name is Crackerjack? OK, that last one is a bit esoteric, and I usually do hold my tongue when I hear a gaffe, but if you tell me “Boris Karloff played Frankenstein,” I will correct you.

Shaming People About Their Lifestyle Habits Does Nothing To Improve Their Health
Going to the doctor usually involves exposing the body with all its faults and flaws. In a culture that increasingly values self control and bodily perfection, being sick or even merely old can lead to feelings of shame and inadequacy. Any defects or difficulties can feel like personal failings, especially if they are linked to lifestyle, such as problems related to weight, sexual behaviour, smoking, addiction, alcohol or other substance use.

The War on Marijuana Hasn’t “Failed”; the War on Marijuana is Wrong
I’m happy about the election results?—?when it comes to marijuana policy: several states voted to legalize marijuana for recreational and medical use. But for those of us who want to see marijuana legalized in all fifty states (no, anarchists: “legalize” does not mean “permission”), let’s not kid ourselves.
