INTRODUCTION Biodiversity on Earth is in rapid decline due to habitat destruction, climate change, pollution, invasive species, and overexploitation of natural resources, characterized as the beginning of the sixth mass extinction (Barnosky et al., 2011; Cowie et al., 2022). As climate change and other stressors outpace the natural recovery capacity of some species, traditional approaches to conservation must be complemented with intervention-based strategies (van Oppen et al., 2017).

Exploring shallow and mesophotic coral ecosystems, Pinheiro et al. show that decreases in fish diversity with distance from the Coral Triangle and classic biodiversity drivers attenuate with depth. Saturated mesophotic communities likely result from convergent environmental filtering of taxa and trophic strategies across ocean basins.
