There are four main comedy anime categories. First is the classic fish out of water, where an extraordinary entity is forced to deal with the mundane world full of normal humans making foolish decisions. The second is out of this world with a healthy dose of sci-fi. The funny but innocuous gags of the first episodes turn out to foreshadow horrific, albeit hilarious, plot twists for the in-world universe.

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is an award-winning Amazon series developed by Amy Sherman-Palladino that follows the debut of an accidental stand-up comedian, the titular Midge Maisel, after her husband leaves her. It's set in 1950s New York and offers all of the Sherman-Palladino staples: a strong female lead with a bite, a warm and quirky supporting cast, rapid-fire dialogue and a spotlight on the tension between family (or societal) love and obligations and the joy of following one's true calling.
