A burnt copy of “Perpetual Motion” was floating around guitar camp when I was thirteen, and it set my world ablaze. Right away, so emboldened by a NYC native banjoist, I sought out lessons over the bridge with his teacher Tony Trischka, and later studied how to adapt bach violin partitas to the 5-string banjo with Punch Brother Noam Pikelny. Fifteen years later, I still turn to Bela and his classical/solo works as my touchstone of daring and inspiration.
