1 Introduction The notion of asking patients, ‘What matters to you?’ (WMTY) rather than ‘What is the matter with you?’ was first proposed by Barry and Edgeman-Levitan in 2012 as an approach to shared decision-making for person-centred care [1]. The authors suggested that WMTY could support meaningful conversations between healthcare professionals and patients or carers and help identify their individual needs, preferences and goals of care.
