The topic of financial distress and bankruptcy has been analyzed since the late sixties, starting with Beaver (1966) and Altman (1968). These authors sought to identify key financial ratios capable of predicting financial failure. Even today, financial statements remain the “backbone” for accounting and play an essential role in the decision-making of the stakeholders (Angenent, Barata & Takes, 2020).

Bankruptcy prediction using ensemble of autoencoders optimized by genetic algorithm

Conclusions Currently, data distribution skewness is a crucial issue in many machine learning domains, and bankruptcy prediction is no exception. In this article, we present an approach based on an ensemble of autoencoders that can cope with the highly imbalanced nature of data. We designed and comparatively analyzed two approaches based on ensembles of shallow autoencoders, namely, an STE and an MTE. Furthermore, the SDA was applied for comparison purposes.
