The Jazz Way
This essay was adapted from an elegy delivered at Lewis H. Lapham’s memorial service in September 2024. When I first met Lewis, he was the age I am now. He liked little parallels like that. He wasn’t a magical thinker, but he appreciated symmetries. Especially historical. He struck me as tall and pinstripe-y, with a great smile. I assumed he’d come from a photo shoot—I honestly did. But no—that was every day. He was flash. He came correct. I was outside help, a “copy jock,” and he called me Bob Cratchit.
Faith, Family and U-M Helping Tarris Reed Jr. Build Confidence

However, Reed himself has not always felt this way. When Reed first attracted the attention of college coaches as a high school freshman, he struggled to understand why he was receiving such high praise.

New Pathways to Encourage Housing Production: A Review of California's Recent Housing Legislation
In this brief, we interview planners and land use lawyers to gain an early understanding about the extent to which the new laws are influencing housing production. Making a connection between new laws and housing production is difficult; data can be hard to gather, and a range of other issues affect production, such as cost and availability of land, labor, and construction supplies. This brief is therefore not meant to be an evaluation of the effectiveness of these state laws.

NAHREP and Terner Center Survey Highlights the Impact of COVID-19 Pandemic on Small Landlords

Today, over three million California renters spend more than 30% of their income on rent, with an additional 1.7 million paying more than 50%. These cost burdens continue to push people, particularly people of color, out of neighborhoods, cities and, in many cases, out of California entirely. COVID-19 will make this situation even worse.

Open Forum: Four ways to fix the California housing crisis
Last week, I stepped down as director of California’s Housing and Community Development department after almost four years. I have seen the good, the bad and the ugly in housing — as a housing developer, senior official with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, and, most recently, state housing director. We implemented numerous historic housing investments and reforms during my tenure in Sacramento. Yet housing challenges throughout California continue to worsen.
Effect of knee unloading shoes on regional plantar forces in people with symptomatic knee osteoarthritis - an exploratory study
This study evaluated the effects of unloading shoes on regional plantar forces in people with symptomatic medial knee OA, and whether alterations in these were moderated by measures of foot posture and/or mobility. The results of this exploratory study showed that unloading shoes increased lateral heel and forefoot force, with concurrent reductions in medial sub regional forces. In addition, unloading shoes shifted the CoP anteriorly and laterally, but did not significantly change the arch index.

Plug-in-Gait calculation of the knee adduction moment in people with knee osteoarthritis during shod walking: comparison of two different foot marker models | Journal of Foot and Ankle Research | Full Text
Knee osteoarthritis (OA) is a common condition that causes significant pain and disability. It affects the medial compartment of the knee more often than the lateral [1], which is likely due to increased loading in the medial compared to the lateral tibiofemoral joint during walking [2]. Due to difficulties with direct in vivo measurement of joint loading, dynamic knee load distribution is commonly inferred using the knee adduction moment (KAM) from three dimensional gait analysis.
