A pair of former Nipawin Hawks have been spending the summer as defending champions. Forward Jordan Simoneau and goaltender Kristian Stead are coming off an SPHL title with the Evansville Thunderbolts. “It was a pretty crazy year, and it was super exciting how we were able to close out the championship. The playoffs were a lot of fun; all three rounds were pretty close, and we knew we had a solid team and a good chance at winning it all, so it was nice to see it all come together,” explained Stead.

Palace entrance construction, environmental sampling not expected to cause traffic delays in Melfort

Some construction and environmental sampling work is occurring in Melfort this week on the blocks of Burrows Ave. W and Macleod Ave. W. The Northern Lights Palace is having its south entrance updated (Macleod Ave. W); the city began removing the rubberized surface on Tuesday afternoon. During the update, the Palace itself won’t be wheelchair accessible, as the south entrance is the only accessible entrance to the building. The work is expected to be completed Wednesday afternoon with temporary gravel.

Melfort RCMP investigating morning shooting

Melfort RCMP are currently investigating a shooting that took place early Tuesday morning. At around 12:20 a.m., police received reports of a shooting on 1 Ave. South in Melfort. Further investigation determined that a fight took place between a group of people, resulting in a pair of injuries. During the fight, a firearm went off, with two men later being taken to hospital. One of the men is dealing with serious injuries, while the other suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
