Semaglutide and COVID-19 mortality risk
Abstract Semaglutide, a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist, is used to treat type 2 diabetes and manage weight in individuals with obesity or who are overweight. Semaglutide was found to reduce COVID-19-related mortality risk in a secondary analysis of the Semaglutide Effects on Cardiovascular Outcomes in People with Overweight or Obesity (SELECT) trial.

Diagnostic performance of a handheld electroretinography test for glaucoma
Key Words glaucoma electroretinography sinusoidal flicker diagnostic performance Introduction Glaucoma is a progressive optic neuropathy that involves retinal ganglion cell (RGC) degeneration and optic nerve cupping, driving visual function deficits that can result in irreversible vision loss.1 Static automated perimetry (SAP) is a current norm for assessment of visual function in glaucoma diagnosis as it enables systematic measurement of the visual field via presentation of stimuli to the...
Water, sanitation, handwashing, and nutritional interventions can reduce child antibiotic use: evidence from Bangladesh and Kenya - Nature Communications
Abstract Antibiotics can trigger antimicrobial resistance and microbiome alterations. Reducing pathogen exposure and undernutrition can reduce infections and antibiotic use. We assess effects of water, sanitation, handwashing (WSH) and nutrition interventions on caregiver-reported antibiotic use in Bangladesh and Kenya, longitudinally measured at three timepoints among birth cohorts (ages 3–28 months) in a cluster-randomized trial.

A cluster-randomized trial of water, sanitation, handwashing and nutritional interventions on stress and epigenetic programming - Nature Communications
Abstract A regulated stress response is essential for healthy child growth and development trajectories. We conducted a cluster-randomized trial in rural Bangladesh (funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, ClinicalTrials.gov NCT01590095) to assess the effects of an integrated nutritional, water, sanitation, and handwashing intervention on child health. We previously reported on the primary outcomes of the trial, linear growth and caregiver-reported diarrhea.
Geographic pair matching in large-scale cluster randomized trials - Nature Communications
Abstract Cluster randomized trials are often used to study large-scale public health interventions. In large trials, even small improvements in statistical efficiency can have profound impacts on the required sample size and cost. Location integrates many socio-demographic and environmental characteristics into a single, readily available feature.

Immunosuppressive Medications and COVID-19 Outcomes in Patients with Noninfectious Uveitis in the Era of COVID-19 Vaccinations
Abstract To determine the risk of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection, hospitalization, and death in the era of COVID-19 vaccination among patients with noninfectious uveitis (NIU) taking immunosuppressive therapies. Retrospective cohort study from July 1, 2021 to June 30, 2022 using data from the Optum Labs Data Warehouse (OLDW) de-identified claims database. Patients with a diagnosis of NIU from January 1, 2017 and who had at least one year of continuous enrollment in the OLDW.
Early-childhood linear growth faltering in low- and middle-income countries - Nature
Abstract Globally, 149 million children under 5 years of age are estimated to be stunted (length more than 2 standard deviations below international growth standards)1,2. Stunting, a form of linear growth faltering, increases the risk of illness, impaired cognitive development and mortality.
Causes and consequences of child growth faltering in low-resource settings - Nature
Abstract Growth faltering in children (low length for age or low weight for length) during the first 1,000 days of life (from conception to 2 years of age) influences short-term and long-term health and survival1,2. Interventions such as nutritional supplementation during pregnancy and the postnatal period could help prevent growth faltering, but programmatic action has been insufficient to eliminate the high burden of stunting and wasting in low- and middle-income countries.
Child wasting and concurrent stunting in low- and middle-income countries - Nature
Abstract Sustainable Development Goal 2.2—to end malnutrition by 2030—includes the elimination of child wasting, defined as a weight-for-length z-score that is more than two standard deviations below the median of the World Health Organization standards for child growth1. Prevailing methods to measure wasting rely on cross-sectional surveys that cannot measure onset, recovery and persistence—key features that inform preventive interventions and estimates of disease burden.

Building an integrated serosurveillance platform to inform public health interventions: Insights from an experts’ meeting on serum biomarkers
Advocacy Local advocacy will be essential, with efforts made to effectively make use of advocacy resources that already exist. Guidelines regarding communicating data that are considered sensitive by local and national authorities need to be established. Potential stigmatization of communities that fail to efficiently implement interventions should be considered.

SRSF7 maintains its homeostasis through the expression of Split-ORFs and nuclear body assembly
Abstract SRSF7 is an essential RNA-binding protein whose misexpression promotes cancer. Here, we describe how SRSF7 maintains its protein homeostasis in murine P19 cells using an intricate negative feedback mechanism. SRSF7 binding to its premessenger RNA promotes inclusion of a poison cassette exon and transcript degradation via nonsense-mediated decay (NMD).
Moving towards transformational WASH - Authors' reply
We agree with Karen Levy and Joseph Eisenberg that observational studies of water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) interventions with carefully designed counterfactuals can play a valuable role in generating evidence on effectiveness, particularly in urban settings.

Population Immunity and Disease Transmission Surveillance
Antibodies are unique among biomarkers in their ability to identify persons with protective immunity to vaccine-preventable diseases and to measure past exposure to diverse pathogens. Most infectious disease surveillance maintains a single-disease focus, but broader testing of existing serologic surveys with multiplex antibody assays would create new opportunities for integrated surveillance.

The Missed Signs of Terrorism
In September 2017, FBI Director Christopher Wray announced that his agency had a 1,000 open domestic terrorism cases and an equal number of homegrown violent extremist investigations, such as individuals aligned with ISIS. After high-profile terror attacks media reports abound that police may have had prior contact with the perpetrators. FBI terror investigations consist of three different levels of inquiry: an assessment, preliminary investigation, and a full investigation.
Effects of water, sanitation, and hygiene interventions on detection of enteropathogens and host-specific faecal markers in the environment: a systematic review and individual participant data meta-analysis
Research in context Evidence before this study Children in areas with poor drinking water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) conditions have increased diarrhoeal disease and reduced growth. Rigorous trials of WASH interventions from the past 5 years have shown mixed efficacy in reducing diarrhoeal disease in children and no improvements in child growth.
