Development of an automated approach for investigating social learning in mice
Abstract Mice have been shown to learn from each other through social interactions. However, the extent and strategies of social learning in mice remain largely unknown, beyond spatially and temporally limited tests of social memory retention. Here, we present a method that integrates (1) the IntelliCage, a commercially available tool for automated behavioral testing, and (2) the Live Mouse Tracker (LMT), an open-source solution for 24/7 live animal tracking.
AlphaSync is an enhanced AlphaFold structure database synchronized with UniProt - Nature Structural & Molecular Biology
Abstract Accurate prediction of protein structures is essential for understanding biological functions and guiding biomedical research. However, maintaining synchronization between structure models and rapidly expanding, continuously evolving protein sequence databases remains a major challenge. Here, we present AlphaSync (alphasync.stjude.org), a comprehensive resource that complements the AlphaFold Protein Structure Database.

Responsibility Gaps and Black Box Healthcare AI: Shared Responsibilization as a Solution
Keywords Artificial intelligence, Responsibilization, Black box healthcare AI, Responsibility gaps, Shared responsibility Abstract As sophisticated artificial intelligence software becomes more ubiquitously and more intimately integrated within domains of traditionally human endeavor, many are raising questions over how responsibility (be it moral, legal, or causal) can be understood for an AI’s actions or influence on an outcome.

Community assessment of methods to deconvolve cellular composition from bulk gene expression - Nature Communications
|
Abstract We evaluate deconvolution methods, which infer levels of immune infiltration from bulk expression of tumor samples, through a community-wide DREAM Challenge. We assess six published and 22 community-contributed methods using in vitro and in silico transcriptional profiles of admixed cancer and healthy immune cells. Several published methods predict most cell types well, though they either were not trained to evaluate all functional CD8+ T cell states or do so with low accuracy.

A genome-wide view of disordered proteins - Nature Biotechnology
Transcription factors containing disordered regions can now be mapped across the genome, aiding functional studies. Nearly 40% of human proteins are predicted to contain intrinsically disordered regions (IDRs), which can remain unfolded or adopt diverse conformational states in the cell. Although inherently difficult to characterize, IDR-containing proteins are known to have important functions in cellular signaling, the formation of biomolecular condensates and transcriptional regulation.
Defining the condensate landscape of fusion oncoproteins - Nature Communications
Abstract Fusion oncoproteins (FOs) arise from chromosomal translocations in ~17% of cancers and are often oncogenic drivers. Although some FOs can promote oncogenesis by undergoing liquid-liquid phase separation (LLPS) to form aberrant biomolecular condensates, the generality of this phenomenon is unknown. We explored this question by testing 166 FOs in HeLa cells and found that 58% formed condensates.

A community effort to bring structure to disorder
With protein structure prediction recently getting a seismic boost in accuracy, hopes are also up to better predict unstructured protein regions that can adopt diverse conformations. CAID, a community effort to revive systematic benchmarking, should help. Fig. 1: The Critical Assessment of Protein Intrinsic Disorder prediction (CAID) is a new biennial challenge for predicting unstructured protein regions and binding regions within them. Sky Sports’ Gary Taphouse on the art of football commentary

Can Cardiff take any inspiration from the Premier League’s greatest escapes?
Photo: Garethbaker1927 (CC BY-SA 3.0) “Let’s go and enjoy it”. This was Neil Warnock’s rallying cry in August ahead of Cardiff City’s second stab at the top flight. Their only previous Premier League season in 2013/14 ended in bleak circumstances when defeat to Newcastle resigned the club to relegation after a troubled season. Surely the 2018/19 season would bring greater enjoyment, at the very least. But it’s been another difficult campaign for the Bluebirds.

Sands United: More than a Sunday League team
Sands United are a newly formed amateur side competing in Northampton’s Nene Valley League. The year in sport 2018: Athletics
The absence of a global championship can sometimes starve the athletics season of its usual excitement and rich story lines. However, there was still much to savour in 2018 with the European Championships being the showpiece event in an absorbing calendar year. The summer’s Championships cemented Dina Asher-Smith’s status as the leading light in a promising year for British athletics. Progress has particularly been made in short distance events and the 22-year-old has been integral to this.
