Burglars hit Salerno's on Tap in Chicago's West Town community

Burglars broke into Salerno's on Tap in Chicago's West Town community early Thursday morning. Police said it was 3:50 a.m. when the thieves damaged the front door at Salerno's, at 1201 W. Grand Ave., and made entry. Owner Michael Salerno said thieves stole a cash box from a video gambling terminal. The thieves also attempted to take an ATM on site, but were not successful. But police said the ATM was damaged. The thieves fled the scene in an unknown direction.

University of Chicago to offer free tuition to students from families making under $250,000 a year

In a potentially life-changing announcement for families in Chicago and beyond, the University of Chicago said it will offer free tuition for students from families making less than $250,000 a year. For families making less than $125,000, students can also get free housing, meals, and other fees covered. This policy will start for undergrads in the fall of 2027. University leaders said they want to deepen their Commitment to affordability to make sure the brightest minds can join them.

CTA revises 2025 ridership figures upward

The Chicago Transit Authority has revised its ridership figures upward for 2025. The transit agency said ridership totals for last year were 19 million higher than originally reported. In a presentation to Chi Hack Night back on May 5, officials said they undercounted the number of rides people took on CTA buses and trains. This was due to limitations in how they previously collected data.
