Top five best fights in Yankees-Red Sox rivalry
The Red Sox-Yankees rivalry is baseball's equivalent of the Hatfields-McCoys. Blood has been spilled over the years and the on-field melee ignited by Red Sox reliever Joe Kelly throwing at Yankee Tyler Austin in April at Fenway Park was a reminder that time has not healed all wounds. Instead, the rivalry is alive and well -- both in the stands among the fans and on the field among the players.

'American Pie' singer Don McLean in Peekskill
Don McLean will stick in his thumb and pull out one plum from "American Pie." No, he won't "explain" the iconic song — which famously uses the Feb. 3, 1959, plane crash that killed rockers Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and J.P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson as a springboard for a fantasia on the decline of rock and roll, and of America itself. He won't decode its famously dense, layered imagery, or reveal the autobiographical elements lurking underneath. All of which are beside the point, he says.
Former rivals lead Bergen Catholic (N.J.) football: ‘There’s no way I thought I’d be on this side’
ORADELL, N.J. — A post-practice film session is about to begin, which means the football office at Bergen Catholic High School is filled to capacity. Players climb over each other in search of an empty chair, some choosing to hop onto the high shelf along a back wall, others taking spots on one of the two flights of stairs that lead up toward the locker room. The spot at the head of the table is still empty though, reserved for head coach Nunzio Campanile.
Reeling Mets stagger to All-Star break
The first half of a season that began with championship aspirations ended with the Mets hobbling into the All-Star break with a 39-47 record. At this point, the Mets are not close to resembling contenders like they were the past two years, but instead appear destined to be sellers in the final few weeks of July. It could be a long final stretch to the season in New York. The Mets ended a disappointing first half with a listless 6-0 defeat to the Cardinals on Sunday afternoon at Busch Stadium.

St. Anthony (N.J.) set to close, ending Bob Hurley’s legendary dynasty
JERSEY CITY, N.J. – In the end, there was nothing more to do. It’s brutal,” legendary basketball coach and school president Bob Hurley said in a news conference announcing the decision.

Is there more to legendary Don Bosco Prep (N.J.) coach Greg Toal’s abrupt retirement?
The soap opera holding North Jersey football in its grip took another dramatic turn Thursday, pitting a local high school powerhouse against its longtime, legendary head coach, two characters on opposite sides of an increasingly ugly fight for public opinion. The latest salvo came from Don Bosco’s (Ramsey, N.J.) president, Father Jim Heuser, who sent an email to alumni in the afternoon that was obtained by The Record.
Meet the Fla. heavyweight wrestler who doubles as tenor lead in school chorus
As a wrestler, he’s had to work a lot harder. But this year, the Cypress Lake High junior has excelled at both. He earned tenor lead with the school’s chorus while the 285-pounder is 31-3 in the heavyweight division and was crowned district champion last weekend. “It’s a cool contrast,” Cypress Lake High vocal director Gary Stroh said. “That independence with going out for wrestling brought him out of his shell. Texas senior has raised nearly $2,000 for children’s cancer research on his own in final football season
You probably haven’t heard of Hayden Yezak. He’s not one of the nation’s top football recruits. He’s a senior at Concordia Lutheran, a relatively small, private high school in Texas. He plays as a kicker, so even within his own team he’s often overlooked. His efforts off the field aren’t.

VIDEO: Trinity Catholic (St. Louis) sophomore shows sleek moves on long TD run

The play, starting at 0:17 of the above clip, begins with Williams taking the shotgun snap deep in his team’s territory. What transpires after that is an athletic symphony from the sophomore. First, a spin move to avoid a tackle near the line of scrimmage, followed a few yards later by a quick juke to the right.

One-armed JV running back Cole Jackson emerges as folk hero at Dallas power Highland Park
He stands just 5-foot-8 and 160 pounds, far from an overpowering presence on a football field. He competes for his school’s junior varsity squad as a junior, and has no real expectation of being called up to the varsity squad this year. Despite those limitations, Cole Jackson is without a doubt the most popular member of the Highland Park football program, one of Texas’ most successful and historic.

Giants' revamped defense is getting results
EAST RUTHERFORD — Mark Ingram’s eyes began darting the closer Landon Collins crept to the line of scrimmage. The Saints running back had a choice to make in the first quarter last Sunday. Collins to the left of him, Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie to the right and Ingram was stuck in the middle, forced to choose. Whichever direction he went, the Giants were going to win. “He actually saw me coming. The running back saw both of us coming,” Collins recalled.
Jets' Jalin Marshall fumbles, then blossoms, against Bills

It was early in the third quarter of last Thursday’s Jets’ win in Buffalo, and the rookie receiver had just hauled in the first catch of his career. Now, The 22-year-old out of Ohio State was fighting for extra yards — as he was being dragged to the turf. But he fought a little too hard, exposed the ball, and the Bills knocked it loose.
Manning, Giants look to improve to rare 3-0 start against Washington
EAST RUTHERFORD – Eli Manning looked around the locker room upon returning to the Giants’ training facility Tuesday morning. He did not sense much complacency from a team that has not been in this position in seven seasons. Manning’s team is 2-0 for just the fourth time in his 13-year tenure as quarterback of the Giants, who won three days ago without their two-time Super Bowl MVP throwing a touchdown.

He finishes the season with a 7-8 record and 3.04 ERA.
Mets fall to Braves at Citi Field, 5-4
ATLANTA –The Mets have feasted on cellar dwellers in the past month except for the team residing in last place in their own division. A late rally fell short and the Mets lost 5-4 to Atlanta on Tuesday night at Citi Field to drop their second straight game to one of baseball’s worst teams. The Mets led by one entering the sixth before Atlanta scored the next five runs, but they scored three in the eighth and had the tying run on base in the ninth when Yoenis Cespedes struck out to end the game.
Despite terror, Jerseyans will keep living life: Voices
Somehow, over these past 15 years, we have found peace with the reality we now experience. Monday morning began much as it always does: a crowded elevator ride down to the subway platform. I live near what is called a “deep tunnel” subway station. The only way down is an elevator. There are emergency stairs, but they are closed most of the time. There’s always a cop on the platform since 9/11 because it is the last stop in Brooklyn before entering an East River tunnel to Manhattan.
World Cup of Hockey: Canada provides ultimate challenge for Team USA

Syndergaard shaky for Mets in 7-3 loss to Braves
NEW YORK – Better to get the bad start out of the way now than in a potential wild-card game. Noah Syndergaard tied his season high by allowing five runs in just 3.2 innings to send the Mets to a 7-3 loss to Atlanta on Monday night at Citi Field. The short outing marked one of Syndergaard’s worst of the season, and the Mets (80-70) have lost four straight at home to Atlanta dating to June. The Mets have scored 11 runs in their last four games.
Young North American team gives World Cup of Hockey an edge
The Americans may yet still make a major impact at the World Cup of Hockey. Just not necessarily the squad that was expected to contend for a medal. The John Tortorella-coached Team USA is playing for its tournament life tonight when it faces heavily favored – in the game and in the tournament – Team Canada after a shocking, 3-0 upset loss to Team Europe in its first game. A second loss will eliminate Team USA from advancing out of the four-team Group A and into the medal round.
