When Daniel Guberman taught music history years ago, he felt like he was on the defensive when grading students’ work. He used a points-based system and anticipated that students would ask him why they lost points here or there on their papers. So he wanted to be consistent. And yet, consistency felt impossible. Papers are good in one place and not so great in another. Could he really defend why one student received an 87 and another a 92? Today, Guberman doesn’t have to.

Jenni Momsen was handing back a class activity in her introductory biology class when a student looked at the 4.75 score they had received out of a total of 5 points. “Dr. Momsen, I never, ever get a 5 on this,” they said in frustration. “How am I supposed to learn if you expect me to be perfect all the time?” That led her to reconsider, and ultimately overhaul, the way she grades.
