Thousands of primary school kids are enduring extra-long swimming lessons, partly because of a lack of access to public swimming pools and a shortage of instructors. Dozens of WA schools are replacing the standard 40-minute lessons held over 10 days with 80-minute sessions held over five days. One school which has opted for the longer sessions, Eddystone Primary School, said in a newsletter it was “due to limited access to pools in the northern suburbs and a shortage of swimming teachers”.

WA’s teachers’ union is chasing a 15 per cent increase to wages and allowances over two years, arguing the public education system its members work in is “no longer fit for purpose.” The State School Teachers Union’s proposed log of claims has revealed it will seek an 8.5 per cent bump in the first year of a new agreement, followed by 6.5 per cent in the second year, or national CPI, whichever is greater.
