Distribution and Specialties of Broadly Versus Narrowly Defined Public Health Nurses Working in Government Settings in the United States, 2022 | AJPH | Vol. Issue
Objectives. To estimate the size of the US governmental public health nurse (PHN) workforce by setting and specialty, including those working outside of health departments. Methods. We used 2022 data from the National Council of State Boards of Nursing, representing 2846 registered nurses (RNs) in almost all states, with weights applied. We examined “setting” and “specialty” of PHNs according to broad and more restricted definitions. Results.
Setting the Direction for Public Health Services and Systems Research
Setting the Direction for Public Health Services and Systems Research The new PHSSR research agenda aims to help build “the evidence base that lays the foundation for and demonstrates the value of a high-performing public health system leading to improved health outcomes for all.” As public health leaders have found, it is hard to fight a pandemic and subsequently “reimagine” our public health systems absent adequate evidence on optimal strategies for building and sustaining high-performing...
Research Funding Is Needed To Support An Effective, Equitable, And Sustainable Public Health System
The COVID-19 pandemic illuminated the connection between long-term funding and preparedness in the United States. That is, the underfunding of public health, and the lack of system integration and interoperability between health care and public health, exacerbated the pandemic. As a result, the US led the world in COVID-19-related deaths, and we faced the . It also exposed, yet again, the persistent social and structural determinants that lead to health inequities.
Public Health Practice Will Be Strengthened by a Uniform Chart of Accounts with Standardized Financial Data
The US public health system has very limited means of consistently accounting for the resources that flow from its varied funding sources to state and local health departments. While we know those resources have long been grossly inadequate, we have also had a terrible time quantifying how much we really need and for what purposes. And we will now have difficulty describing how new funds, since the COVID-19 pandemic, are being spent.
Public Health Services and Systems Research (PHSSR) at AcademyHealth: An Opportunity to Inform Policy and Future Investments in Practice-Based Public Health Research - JPHMP Direct
The JPHMP Direct audience is likely familiar with the field of Public Health Services and Systems Research (PHSSR) and its evolution. The Journal of Public Health Management and Practice has provided a supportive home for PHSSR. However, this blog intends to highlight the importance of disseminating PHSSR evidence at national meetings and to a broader stakeholder audience.
Announcing the Consortium for Workforce Research in Public Health (CWORPH)
Prior to the first national survey of public health employees, the Public Health Workforce Interests and Needs Survey/ PH WINS, we heard time and time again about different public health workforce training needs and the need for more public health workforce research; however, we were only hearing what the workforce needed from public health leaders. We had not yet heard directly from the workers themselves in a national context. There was, in fact, an enormous gap in knowledge about the workforce.
The DASH model: Data for addressing social determinants of health in local health departments
Abstract Recent frameworks, models, and reports highlight the critical need to address social determinants of health for achieving health equity in the United States and around the globe. In the United States, data play an important role in better understanding community-level and population-level disparities particularly for local health departments.
A critical gap: Advanced practice nurses focused on the public's health
Highlights • The U.S. needs advanced practice nurses focused on the health of whole populations. • DNP specialty preparation in public health is essential to the nursing profession. • Investments are needed for graduate nursing education in this specialty practice. Abstract Background The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the need for nurse leaders who “embrace the interconnection” between medicine and public health.
Investing In Evidence To Inform Practice: Reimagining The US Public Health System
The COVID-19 pandemic has exposed major cracks in our public health system of public, private, and voluntary entities (for example, public health agencies, health care providers, public safety organizations, nonprofit organizations, laboratories, and others) that deliver essential public health services.
Attacks on public-health workers are attacks on the health of the public
Dec. 29, 2020 at 1:57 pm Updated Dec. 29, 2020 at 1:57 pm Public-health leaders in Washington and in health departments across the country are used to making decisions that are painful for communities, businesses and individuals — much like your own medical provider has to sometimes give you bad news or recommend lifestyle changes to improve your health.
COVID-19 crisis shows cracks in underfunded public health
We all want firefighters at the ready — trained and well-equipped — for when disaster strikes. And when there are no fires, we want to know they are helping make our communities safe. The images of well-prepared fire response teams comforts us. They symbolize a protected community, a community that has invested in “readiness.” The same should be true of public health. We want well-trained, well-equipped and adequately funded public health departments to prevent and address health crises.
National Institutes of Health Pathways to Prevention Workshop: Achieving Health Equity in Preventive Services
Abstract Expert groups, including the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF), recommend a range of clinical preventive services for persons at average risk for disease. Use of these services often is substantially lower among racial and ethnic minority groups, rural residents, and persons of lower socioeconomic status.
Social determinants of health and disparities in prenatal care utilization during the Great Recession period 2005-2010
Abstract Background Early, regular prenatal care utilization is an important strategy for improving maternal and infant health outcomes. The purpose of this study is to better understand contributing factors to disparate prenatal care utilization outcomes among women of different racial/ethnic and social status groups before, during, and after the Great Recession (December 2007–June 2009).
Population-Focused Practice Competency Needs Among Public Health Nursing Leaders in Washington State
Public health nurses (PHNs) need effective strategies to reduce health disparities, requiring a workforce that can practice with a population-focus across the continuum of care and with an ecological approach to health. A statewide leadership group of county-level PHN leaders in Washington assessed their training needs in population-focused knowledge and skills. Interview findings from 17 members were coded based on the Quad Council PHN Competencies.
