“Hers was a unique eye,” says Lee director Ellen Kuras of the groundbreaking WWII photojournalist, Vogue model and her surrealist muse Lee Miller. “One could argue it’s a female gaze, but I tend to think of it as a humanist gaze; someone who really looked at people and cared about people and believed in justice. That’s what drove her.” Having first met Kuras while co-starring in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind,Kate Winslet (with her producer hat on) tapped the cinematographer to direct Lee.
Presented with Commentary: the entertainment and educational values of audio commentaries • Journal • A Letterboxd Magazine
“Fuck DVD” is how Kevin Smith chose to begin the Criterion Collection LaserDisc commentary for his third feature film, Chasing Amy. At the time, heading toward the end of the 1990s, home video was in a state of flux, ebbing and flowing between the hoard of general consumers clamoring for sell-through-priced VHS tapes and ardent home theater junkies eager to acquire the latest and greatest technology to show off the superiority of their deluxe systems.

Forever Young: the beautiful boyhood of Stand By Me, nearly four decades on • Journal • A Letterboxd Magazine
“You guys wanna go see a dead body?” It’s the question that triggers the boyhood adventure at the heart of Stand by Me, a tender drama about four friends who wander out of their small town to search for a missing boy’s remains. If that sounds a bit morbid (it is), it might not be a surprise that the movie is based on a 1982 novella called The Body, by the horror master himself, Stephen King.

Caption This: the subtitling champions working to make festivals, screenings and global cinema more accessible • Journal • A Letterboxd Magazine
While accepting the Golden Globe for Best International Feature Film in 2019, Parasitedirector Bong Joon-ho famously said, “Once you overcome the one-inch-tall barrier of subtitles, you will be introduced to so many more amazing films.” A few weeks later, the director would go on to accept the Oscar for Best Picture, the first time in the history of the Academy that a non-English-language film took the ceremony’s main prize. After her incendiary revenge thriller Promising Young Woman, the Oscar-winning writer and Oscar-nominated director flips the script towards something different and daring for her follow-up, Saltburn.
Focus on Oil, Inflation & Interest Rates Overly Dramatic & Simplistic.
John O’Connell weighs in on higher oil prices, inflation and interest rates and explains why much of the market and media conversation is overly dramatic and simplistic. He believes the “higher for longer” narrative for rates is not useful when viewed from a one-to-two year time frame and that rates could be much lower by then.
Animal Kingdom: Fair Play’s Chloe Domont on post-#MeToo politics and her finance thriller • Journal • A Letterboxd Magazine
There is no institution more ready to be toppled on a cinema screen than a loving relationship. Particularly a loving heterosexual relationship, blossoming in the 21st century in the shadow of #MeToo and with the ever-looming threat of capitalism ready to burn the whole thing down. It might not sound romantic but there’s something undoubtedly seductive about the prospect, which Chloe Domont knows all too well with the games she plays in her debut feature Fair Play.

Why Economic and Earnings Recessions May Already Be Over
Germany this week technically fell into recession with two consecutive quarters of GDP contraction. It’s been the consensus for a long while that the U.S. will eventually do the same. After all, most of the economic data, with the exception of resilient employment numbers, indicates that will be the case. Or does it? The major stock indices continue to rise and we haven’t seen a flight to the safety of government bonds.

That got us to thinking about Chris Mayer, Co-Founder & Portfolio Manager of Woodlock House Family Capital, and author of 100-Baggers: Stocks That Return 100-to-1 and How to Find Them.

The director calls Blume’s own take on Margaret’s spiritual journey “profound”, allowing this twelve-year-old to decide for herself what God even is, before asking whether he’s there.

What's Causing the Largest Moves on Record for Safe Haven Assets?
Risk happens slowly then all at once. That axiom was in evidence this week across financial asset classes, especially safe haven assets, which saw some of their largest moves on record. That as Silicon Valley Bank, Signature Bank and Credit Suisse all needed to be rescued and the U.S. Federal Reserve doled out more money this week to financial institutions at its so-called discount window than in 2008 – $165 billion vs. $111 billion.
Why Dangerous Assumptions Are Embedded in "Cheap" Stocks
Based on valuation, this stock is “cheap.” We are sure you have heard that more than once from a portfolio manager, analyst or other type of market player. But what if their assumptions for economic growth and earnings are incorrect from the start? Then that valuation considered “cheap” is immaterial and the stock becomes a trap.
Explaining the Inverted Yield Curve & Why It Matters
“Because I was inverted.” – Tom Cruise as Pete “Maverick” Mitchell in Top Gun ** So, the yield curve is inverted. What does that mean? Well, going back to the 1950s, it has a perfect track record of predicting recessions (except for one time in the 1960s), technically two consecutive quarters of negative growth. The yield on the U.S. Two-Year Treasury Note (some use the U.S. Three-Month Treasury Bill) has been above the yield on the U.S. 10-year Treasury Note for about nine months.
