“What’s the worst building in Minneapolis, and why is it the Multifoods Tower?” That’s the question I jokingly asked my friend Vince a while back. He’s one of the Twin Cities’ most dogged local historians, and we sat down at a St. Paul brewery because I needed to pick his brain. I wanted to know, specifically, if the City Center / Multifoods Tower was the worst building in the city and, if not, what competition it had.

Wes Burdine, the owner of a University Avenue bar in St. Paul, was pretty excited when construction was set to begin on his new outdoor tap building. His business, the Black Hart of Saint Paul, offers a unique combination: an historic GLBTQ bar that regularly hosts drag shows, and a soccer bar within walking distance of Allianz Field. It’s a juxtaposition on full display during the once-in-four-years collision of Twin Cities PRIDE and the World Cup soccer tournament.

In praise of Twin Cities strip malls

First things, first: I don’t like strip malls. I’ve long disdained the definitive U.S. form of urban commercial architecture, and the reason is simple. One-story commercial buildings fronted by surface parking lots invariably lack good sidewalks, create lots of asphalt and cultivate sprawl. If it were up to me, strip malls would not exist. That said, I’ve had to rethink my strip mall priors.
