Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

Becoming an Editorial Assistant at the Daily Mail.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

No, but my girlfriend gave me one for my birthday.

How is social media changing news?

Information can be accessed faster than ever before. And is changing way we consume news (freely and digitally, as appose to print).

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

John Jonah Jameson Jr from Spiderman.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

A key member of civil society that is crucial to public discourse and to democracy.

What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

Short and snappy. Also always remember to ask yourself 'Why X is relevant?'

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

Off the top of my head: Microsoft Office, Google Drive, Adobe InDesign, Adobe Photoshop, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and so on and so forth.

What's your favorite social network?

Twitter (although I cannot use it for more than two hours a day, otherwise I get stuck in my own echo-chamber).

Who do you wish followed you?

On Twitter? I suppose Peter Obourne because I he was one of my favorite columnists growing up.

Why did you become a journalist?

To tell stories that deserve telling. And to keep a check on, and hold to account, those in powerful positions within society.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

I was a writer for my school newspaper before becoming Editor where I designed the new website, hosted podcasts and commissioned articles.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

Probably my debut for the Telegraph where I opened up about my experience suffering from autism and its empowering nature.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Don't give up. It's a tough industry to break into so hang on and others will always be there to help.

When's the best time to pitch you?

Sometime in the afternoon when I am having lunch checking my emails, news brief and social media on my phone most likely.

What's the best pitch you ever got?

"Can I write an article about why sport is pointless?"

What's the worst pitch you ever got?

Not one stands out, but I have pitches that simply state 'I want to write about politics' without explaining exactly their focus.

What's your favorite drink?

Scotch whiskey, not bourbon.

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

Probably out reporting and trying to find a story. In my spare time, I read books, cook food and go out to the pub with my friends.

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

New York Times.
