Introduction Al is a substance of the highest content following oxygen and silicon in the Earth's crust (Feng et al., 2019). It mostly exists in the form of non-toxic insoluble aluminosilicate or alumina in soil, but becomes toxic in the form of Al3+ ions when soil pH is lower than 5 (Li and Johnson, 2016). Therefore, Al toxicity is often a major threat to crop productivity in acid soils (Kochian et al., 2004; Ma, 2007).
