The Newfoundland and Labrador government has been ordered to pay provincial court judges a pay raise that it said it can't afford. The raise was recommended by an independent tribunal in 2016 and will mean about $32,000 more a year for each judge, with portions of the raise retroactive to 2013. In rejecting the tribunal's report, the Dwight Ball government pointed to an uncontrolled growth in expenditures, and a dramatic fall in revenues from oil production.

Hundreds of Newfoundland and Labrador children from 90 schools are gathering this week to skip their way to better health. The fifth annual Jump Rope for Heart, known as Jumpfest, is also raising money for research into heart disease and stroke prevention. About 1,500 children were at the NL Sports Centre in St. John's Tuesday as the three-day event began.

Paul Fewer is the first person most customers see when they eat at the Hungry Heart Cafe in St. John's. He's been there since the restaurant with a mission opened its doors a decade ago. "Prior to the Hungry Heart, I was on the street as a hitchhiker. Now I'm no longer streetside. I have an apartment, I have a steady job in Newfoundland and I like it very much," Fewer said, as the cafe prepared to mark its 10th birthday with a little celebrating.
