AUGUSTA, Ga. (WFXG) - Many local organizations still reeling from the budget cuts decided on during Tuesday’s Augusta-Richmond County commission meeting. In an effort to make up a $21 million dollar budget deficit, the county commission opted to cut funding to city and non-governmental organizations. Many city departments were hit hard, receiving a 5% budget cut heading into 2026. The Richmond County Marshal’s Office was among the city organizations that took the 5% hit.

Unicoi County budget speeds through commission with federal decline

The Unicoi County Commission met to consider the county's operating budget for the fiscal year 2026 and to place it in a newspaper, approving the measure in a 9–0 vote Monday. The most notable change in the budget from the previous fiscal year is a significant drop of federal money in the general fund, with a decrease of $1,450,593 to $22,464, an expected difference in the wake of the Hurricane Helene flooding event of Sept. 27.
