What was your first job as a journalist?
My first job as a journalist was writing for TopMobileBanks.com where I documented the easiest ways to go about daily banking activities.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
I haven't used a typewriter, and I don't think that I've ever seen one outside of a museum.
How is social media changing news?
Social media is making news more accessible than ever, but it's also making news less trustworthy than it has been in the past.
What does it mean to be a journalist?
Being a journalist, to me, means synthesizing information from a source and giving it to the public as truthfully and succinctly as possible.
What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
By email.
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
I use EmakiCMS, Asana, and Slack for the most part. I've used WordPress, Discord, and too many SEO tools to count.
What's your favorite social network?
I'm a sucker for Instagram (my handle is @bransongarza).
Who do you wish followed you?
I wish everyone followed me so that I could get more brand deals.
Why did you become a journalist?
I became a journalist because of the freedom that comes with the job!
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
My high school didn't have a newspaper, but I've been a copyeditor for my college newspaper.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
I wrote an article about the darkest anime ever created. It was my first article on ScreenRant to get more than 100k views in a week!
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Find what you love and stick to it! If you love money, that's cool too!
When's the best time to pitch you?
The best time to pitch me is whenever. I like to keep myself busy, but I'll look at your pitch as soon as I can.
What's the best pitch you ever got?
I once had the opportunity to write for a beloved YouTube channel with over 15 million subscribers!
What's the worst pitch you ever got?
A fastball down the middle when I was 12.
What's your favorite drink?
My favorite drinks are GHOST Energy Drinks!
When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?
I'm most likely at school, at the gym, or doing standup comedy!
Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?
My favorite publication to read is VICE.
What's the most common misperception about your beat?
The most common misperception about anime is that it's for a certain demographic. Anime is for everyone!
