We all miss the mark some times
As a little girl from Jones Creek, the county fair was the closest thing to Disney World that we had. A true family event for us, we left no booth unexplored, no food untasted, and no carnival ride too wild to ride on a dare. By craning my head above the dashboard of our car, I could see the colorful Ferris wheel that promised we were close. If the car windows were down, I could actually catch a whiff of candy apples and beef on the hoof.
Accepting God’s words real game changer
Our young granddaughters are learning how to play board games, and I am re-learning with them as it’s been a long while for me. One of their current favorites is Candy Land, and thank goodness, because there are not too many skills needed for that one. The middle grandchild struggled at first if she lost, but now she understands that even though she might be behind at times, one move could put her in the lead. She loves it when she can skip over me and win the game.
Just Humor Me: God’s love root cause of all healing
Growing up on a farm, injuries were frequent but not taken too seriously. Not much notice was given unless you were bleeding on something important or a bone might be broken. My parents were loving and attentive to our needs, but by the time I came along they had passed through all the usual childhood diseases and mishaps with my three older siblings. So most of my scrapped knees, knots, bumps, bruises and occasional lacerations were treated much the same way.
2026 - Year of Jubilee for all who believe
When I used to hear the word Jubilee, I thought of cake. Then I discovered in the Old Testament it was a time of celebration in the Jewish culture. The word Jubilee in Hebrew means “ram’s horn” which was used to signal the beginning of Jubilee. (Another related word means “release, liberty.”) According to Leviticus, this was a year when slaves and prisoners would be freed, debts would be forgiven, and the mercies of God would be particularly manifest. Leviticus Chapter. 25 and Deuteronomy Chapter. 15.
Time to take America back to the future once envisioned
Thousands of years ago there was a nation of people who loved God, but through the reign of several ungodly kings, who begot ungodly children to reign after them, that nation quit loving God and became very corrupt. The temple was used to worship idols, and the altars became places of rituals and sacrifices to false gods, such as the sun, the moon and stars. All throughout the land, false prophets and priests led the people to worship those idols.
Who Wrote The Book of Love?
When I was in my late teens, I tried to discredit the Bible in my mind as just a book of suggestions or opinions written by a group of men a long time ago. I was deceived. From the beginning, Satan has always been challenging the word of God and God’s love for us. He attacks our thoughts with deceptive suggestions, “Are you really His beloved.” “Is the Bible really true?” “Did God really say that?” The answer is yes. I love the word of God.
Just Humor Me: Small hurts teach lessons in faith
I grew up in the country and with woods nearby to explore there were endless opportunities to discover all creatures great and small. Many days I would head out the door with nothing more than a canteen of cherry Kool-Aid, bug jar and a stick to see what I could unearth. My mother would yell after me, “Have a good time Honey, but be careful, and be home way before dark. Don’t go past the Huntington property. And, oh hey Brenda?” Brenda?
God Can Bring Refreshing Times For All
Well, I am ready for some relief from this heat! I recall when our A/C went out a few years ago. I could hear the fan going, but it was not cooling. The temps inside were hovering at a toasty 86 degrees. Thankfully, the repairs were covered under our new homeowner’s warranty, but it still took a couple more days before the A/C company could come see about it. Needless to say, I was very relieved when a repair truck finally pulled into our drive.
Just Humor Me: Look for those times when God smiles down upon on you
I recall a day early in our marriage when I drove to my parents’ house with every intention of singing the “someone done me wrong song” to whoever would listen. I don’t remember why I was in that sobbing condition, but I was still in the “it’s all about me” stage that had begun at birth, and lasted into my early thirties.
Love Never Fails
We recently spent a week with friends in Colorado near where the wild fires were spreading rapidly. We could actually see the smoke climbing up hillsides dotted with houses as we made our way home down I-25. It was so hard because you knew someone’s home or business was about to be destroyed. It is truly heartbreaking when we see pictures and videos of devastating fires, earthquakes, floods and other calamities on this planet. I understand how people are questioning the “why” of it.

Working Hard At Resting In Him
Dear Readers A few years ago I did a Bible study regarding how we can choose to have an excellent attitude whatever our circumstances may be, and this column reflects what I have learned from my failures and God's grace. THE FAMILY PLAN
Just Humor M e “Is this all there is?” Several years ago I was visiting with a client, and when he was called away for a moment, one of his employees began a conversation with me. I’ll never forget his demeanor, shoulders slumped over a bit, his long drawn face reflected many hardships in such a young life. Then he gazed at me with an empty look in his eyes and asked, “Is this all there is?” Well, have you ever asked this important question? I did- many times.
SOAK IT UP!
Just Humor M I was having a conversation with a friend awhile back after a needful rain had passed over our property. Although it didn’t last long, it dropped about 1.5” and I told her I was grateful for that watering, and my plants sure loved it. It has been dry for awhile at our place, and the rain that had been popping up on the radar seemed to just barely skim past us.
'YEAST' WE FORGET!
Just Humor M Dear Readers, as we begin a new year I have it in my heart to dive into the word of God with more purpose than ever before. I felt impelled to share this column again as a reminder to myself and hopefully bring a smile to your face ... When my husband was growing up his mother would always bake homemade cinnamon rolls for their family on Christmas morning. So with her passing many years ago, I continued on with this tradition at our home.
ASHES IN MY BIBLE
Just Humor M e Dear Readers, January 11th will mark the 17th anniversary when I was supernaturally delivered from a 32 year cigarette addiction that began when I was just 13 years old. I want to share this powerful testimony again of God’s unfailing love, grace and mercy toward all who will believe and receive… I use to make New Year’s resolutions. I had several declarations tied up into one, which was to get free from ALL of my addictions.
A SON IS BORN
Just Humor M e Dear Readers, one of my favorite Christmas songs has become, “Mary Did You Know.” What a wonderful perspective from the women chosen by God to carry His Son, to give birth to the King of kings, and the Lord of lords, but it all began with ... a seed. I wrote this column several years ago, and it has become a tradition to publish this message that blessed me so much the first time I heard it.
UNWRAPPING GOD'S LOVE
Just Humor M e I am reminded of an experience that happened at my office many years ago. At that time, my computer was stationed behind a counter very near the front door, it was late in the afternoon, and my sweet tooth had kicked in. I recall candy hopping from one desk to another looking for the right treat. Suddenly, my eyes landed on the familiar colored wrapping of a “Charms Blow Pop.” Yes! I love those things with the chewing gum tucked inside.
A CHILD AT HEART
Just Humor M e At 21 months old our little granddaughter brings us so much joy. She wakes up with a sparkle in her eye, a toothy grin and outstretched arms to us. She will let out a squeal of excitement and clap her little hands at the smallest things. A container of Mandarin oranges is cause for great celebration as she shoves fistfuls into her mouth. It gives us pleasure to give her nice things, not spoiling her, but being kind to her, helping her and teaching her.
LOVE NEVER FAILS
Just Humor M e Something extraordinary occurred several years ago that I believe needs to be shared often... It was during the Christmas season that *Mr. Mason walked into our office for the first time, and he was very angry with us. The elderly man’s appearance was a bit tattered with uncombed hair and a ragged western shirt. With furrowed brow he stomped to the counter. “May I help you?,” I asked. “I didn’t get my paper!!,” he fired..
LAW MAKER-CHAIN BREAKER
Just Humor M e I was traveling home from work last year, when I met a school bus coming from the opposite direction. As I was approaching, the bus stopped to let a child off. The red lights started flashing and the “STOP” signs appeared on both sides, so I slowed to a complete stop. Now, this was a busy time on that highway, so there were several cars who had to stop behind me. Suddenly, someone gave an anxious honk for me to go.
THE PERFECT 'GIFT' FOR ANY CHILD
Just Humor M e With three young grandgirls, we have already begun our Christmas list for them, and I believe this year it will be less toys, and more experiences. For example, more excursions to the park, picnics, kickball in the backyard and sidewalk chalk art.
Brenda and the Bible: Friend or Foe? By Brenda Groves - The Post Newspaper
6 The Post Newspaper Contributing Writer I have recently discovered a new fondness for the world of plants. Now, as a child growing up on a small farm I was surrounded by my Father’s vegetable gardens, while my Mother’s love for plants produced the most beautiful flowers. . Sadly, I never paid enough attention to learn from either parent how to care for my own gardens.
Brenda and the Bible: The Language of Love By Brenda Groves - The Post Newspaper
5 The Post Newspaper Contributing Writer Dear Readers: it is in my heart to share this truth again about a special gift available to every born again believer in Christ Jesus. If you have your receivers turned on, and choose not to be offended, this testimony will bless you above measure. When our son was a toddler and just beginning to talk he had a slight speech impediment. He could not produce his “r’s” very well. Yup. It was Elmer Fudd’s disease.
Brenda and the Bible: Going After The Promises of God By Brenda Groves - The Post Newspaper
5 The Post Newspaper Contributing Writer What would compel a person to navigate a large truck through treacherous road conditions, heavy rain and strong wind to retrieve something of importance? Faith. This is exactly what our previous Publisher did back in 2017, on the Monday morning after Harvey made its initial landfall and began slowly moving up the Texas coast.
Brenda and the Bible: The “Rock” By Brenda Groves - The Post Newspaper
19 The Post Newspaper Contributing Writer As a youth I attended a few rock concerts in my day. I recall how my friends and I counted down the days until “THE” day arrived bringing with it our favorite bands. Toxic fumes from hairspray cans filled my parents house. We would run through upteen different outfit changes, before settling back on the first one. All the way to Houston there would be wrestling matches over the cassette player, the winner’s favorite song receiving the most rewinds.
Brenda and the Bible: Just, In Passing By Brenda Groves - The Post Newspaper
7 The Post Newspaper Contributing Writer The Texas Senate just passed a bill that would require public schools to display the Ten Commandments in every classroom beginning next year. Now, even though the Ten Commandments were given under the Old Covenant, and under the New Covenant we are not under the law anymore, Matt.
Brenda and the Bible: Free the Slave! By Brenda Groves - The Post Newspaper
6 The Post Newspaper Contributing Writer Free the Slave! As a child growing up with three older sisters we played many board games, Monopoly being the most popular. Well, I was reintroduced to the game of Monopoly awhile back, but I was never very successful at it.
I'D SPEND TIME WITH YOU LORD, BUT I'M LATE FOR CHURCH!!" By Brenda Groves - The Post Newspaper
2 The Post Newspaper Contributing Writer The minute these words left my mouth that Sunday morning I knew something wasn’t right. I might as well have added, “If You want, we can talk when I get home, but after the dishes are done. Oh, and I need to wash the car first before it rains. And I totally forgot that I wanted to make some soup. Guess, I’ll have to go grocery shopping also.
WHEN UNDER ASSAULT, TAKE CAPTIVE THE THOUGHT
By Brenda Groves The Post Newspaper Contributing Writer I was recently accused of several crimes that I had not committed. The charges were brought up against me and I did not immediately seek counsel so before I knew it, I found myself in court. The false evidence was stacked up against me and without recalling what the law states, I pleaded guilty. The punishment was severe, and I was miserable.

Brenda and the Bible: To Catch a Thief
By Brenda Groves The Post Newspaper Contributing Writer A year or so ago, I had a short, yet very vivid dream. The dream started with a man trying to get into our back door. He had one foot in, but I was pushing hard against the door and managed to close and lock it. Suddenly, I saw him through the window walking around the side of the house. I remembered that I had left the front window open, so I ran to the living room where he was already trying to climb in.
Brenda and the Bible: I Am A Child Of God
By Brenda Groves The Post Newspaper Contributing Writer Several years ago, I remember hearing about a young child who had gotten her finger smashed in a door. A co-worker told me about the three-year old’s parents sharing this amazing testimony with some church members. When the accident occurred, they discovered that the child’s finger was nearly severed, so they wrapped her hand in a towel and quickly drove to the nearby hospital.

Brenda and the Bible: Look Up!
By Brenda Groves The Post Newspaper Contributing Writer Dear Readers, I wrote this column several years ago, but it bears repeating …. I had left my office a few weeks ago at the end of a busy day. I had barely looked up from my desk and computer. In fact, my head was still in a bent down angle as I came around the corner of the building toward my car. But I finally did look up and witnessed one of the most stunning sunsets I have ever seen displayed across the sky.
Brenda and the Bible: I See The Evidence
By Brenda Groves The Post Newspaper Contributing Writer The other day, I was driving across a parking lot in Alvin and was reminded that I once had car trouble on that very spot. It was many years ago, and with 290,000 miles, well…that old Jeep was starting to show its age. I saw steam rising from under the hood and suspected it was the radiator. I am no mechanic, yet I knew exactly what to do: I prayed. “Lord! Help!” Pretty simple.
Brenda and the Bible: “For You, Lord? I Get To?”
By Brenda Groves The Post Newspaper Contributing Writer I once heard a man share that when he and his wife first got started in the ministry, they personally struggled financially for several years. They finally started seeing some headway as the little church grew, and both the church and the Pastor started experiencing some financial relief.
