The community centre in St. Thomas bears the name of local hockey legend Joe Thornton, and now there is a statue inside the main doors to welcome people to the facility. The statue – made by St. Thomas artist Al Jewell- was unveiled in a private ceremony Tuesday. Thornton was in attendance with family and friends to see the work. Jewell started working on pieces of the sheet-metal sculpture 16 years ago when the new arena opened, and those pieces sat in his shop until last September.

Local athletes dominate at Canadian Track and Field Championships

A haul of gold medals is coming to the London region after the Canadian Track and Field Championships in Ottawa, Ont. Nine different athletes who were born in the area captured first place in their event. Jackson Mackay, 19, won the decathlon title with 7812 points, and set championship records in the decathlon 110m hurdles, discus, and high jump on his way to the crown. “I’m happy to be done all ten events because it’s a grind,” Mackay told reporters after the event.

New plaque honours former Wonderland Gardens

A big band fittingly kicked off the summer concert series at historic Springbank Gardens. “This particular venue has great acoustics and always a great audience,” said Ron Gilbert, of Ron Gilbert and the Music Makers. “I do remember playing here when the old Wonderland Gardens was here back in the ‘60s, and ‘70s and I played here with the Lionel Thornton Band.” Wonderland Gardens opened in 1935 and was home to huge names in music until its closure in 2004.
