Brett Wigdortz: We don’t need radical reform to restore childminder numbers
The chief executive of tiney and spokesperson for the Childminding2030 campaign says that straightforward, logical fixes, rather than 'sweeping reforms and radical policies', are key to increasing the number of childminders Brett Wigdortz, CEO of tiney and spokesperson for Childminding2030 The number of childminders who’ve left the profession in the last thirty years would fill Old Trafford Stadium.
‘Why this is not the time to shy away from a childminding strategy’ - Nursery World
‘A new era of child-centred government’. That’s what Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson declared at this year's Labour conference. This is an encouraging commitment, backed up by some solid, meaningful plans to invest in early years education and ensure better outcomes for children across the country. But, just as in the Labour manifesto, one crucial component was overlooked: childminders.
Brett Wigdortz: Landlords should be encouraged to accommodate childminders, but so should local authorities
Last month the Government urged landlords to be more open-minded about tenants’ requests to childmind in rented accommodation. A fair stance, you might think, given the enormity of the childcare crisis. But so far it’s received backlash from landlords who feel their hands are tied by insurers and mortgage providers, or has been met with criticism from those within the childcare sector who think it’s yet another minor intervention unlikely to affect real change.

The NCS, a key plank of David Cameron’s plans to create a Big Society, received a £180.5 million grant from central government in 2016-17.
Reflecting on Millions Learning: Lessons from Teach First’s scaling story | Brookings Institution
In the United Kingdom there are nearly 4 million children living in poverty. This alone has a disproportionate effect on their chances in school, in learning and in life. In 2002, while working as a management consultant, I was tasked to look into why children from low-income backgrounds were under-performing in London’s schools. What I discovered was shocking. I couldn’t find a single London school with a majority low-income intake that was meeting the national grade averages.
The Best Books on Leadership
Before we talk about the five books, can you give me some examples of how you have seen leadership helping children with their education? My belief is that every great teacher is a great leader. That is a core skill of teaching, because the definition of leadership is bringing people to a place they need to get to, that they themselves don’t think they could reach. I have seen a number of teachers who have set ambitious goals and used strong values within their classroom.
