1 INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND The Anaerobic Digestion and Bioresources Association1 states that, as of July 2024, the United Kingdom had 740 operational anaerobic digestion (AD) facilities, excluding traditional water treatment plants. The National Non-Food Crops Centre2 describes how these include small-scale, often farm-based plants processing <1000 tonnes of feedstock per annum, up to larger-scale plants processing 50,000–200,000 tonnes of organic feedstock per annum.
