Colonoscopy’s Role in CRC Screening, The Importance of Adequate Bowel Preparation
Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related death in the United States, a stark reality that underscores the need for effective screening and prevention. Each March, Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month serves as a reminder of the importance of early detection to reduce colorectal cancer’s significant impact. Colonoscopy remains the gold-standard screening tool, but its effectiveness relies heavily on adequate bowel preparation.

When MKE's Borkowski reaches for a can of PBR, she grabs some of her own art
Milwaukee artist Alyssa Borkowski – aka Neat Cool Fun – has the rare opportunity to be able to go to her neighborhood store and see her artwork printed on cans of beer for sale. Borkowski, a UW-Milwaukee graduate, is one of 10 winners of Pabst’s 10th Edition Art Can Contest, which means her artwork adorns cans of Pabst Blue Ribbon and she gets $10,000, too.

Hollywood in Flames
JUNE 21, 2019 ON SEPTEMBER 25, 1970, two fires, one started by downed power lines, the other by burning rubbish at a public dump outside Malibu, both stoked by 80 mile-per-hour Santa Ana winds, sparked the most devastating wildfire — to that point — in California history. Over the next 10 days, more than 500,000 acres burned, leaving 350 injured and 13 dead. Among the fire’s lesser casualties was the old Spahn movie ranch, just northwest of Los Angeles in the Santa Susana Mountains.

Classic Postmortem: The making of Half-Life 2
This article originally appeared in the November 2005 issue of Game Developer magazine. While building Half-Life, which shipped in November 1998, Valve created a method of decentralized design called the Cabal Process (described in this article on Gamasutra), which used a small cabal of a few people from various disciplines to tackle the design. Needless to say, when design began on Half-Life 2, we had great interest in applying the same structure and principles to its development, too.
11-man: Fairfield Eagles will host Bigfork Nov. 10
With a victory over Manhattan/Manhattan Christian last Saturday, the Fairfield/Augusta football team advances to the Class B semifinal game Nov. 10 against Bigfork. The 1 p.m. game in Fairfield pits the Eagles, the number one seed from the North at 10-0, against Bigfork, the number two seed from the West at 9-1. The two teams have met twice in playoffs: in 2010 Bigfork defeated Fairfield in the state championship game, 24-21, and in 2016 in the first round of playoffs, Fairfield won, 56-12.
The LARB Ball NBA Roundtable
With the NBA season in full swing, I reached out to Theresa Runstedtler and Yago Colás, sports scholars with expertise (and books in progress) about the pro game, to discuss the state of the league today and its history. Moving between on- and off-court issues, and from the 1970s to our expectations for the new season, the conversation takes up topics including LeBron’s move west, NBA vs.

The oil stays in the picture
Seen from above, in photographs and films by Edward Burtynsky or Peter Mettler, the Alberta tar sands appear as Earth-scale inkblots, their forests cut clear and soil scraped clean, their ink spilled into smooth tailing ponds carved out in straight lines and graceful curves. They are at once beautiful and terrifying, geometric and enigmatic, lyrical and dreadful. In a word: sublime.
What it’s like to watch everything melt
I tend to work in analogies when it comes to describing something big, as in a concept or an event. In this case, the work-life experience of having the Bon-Ton Stores, Inc. headquarters go through Chapter 11 bankruptcy and eventually liquidation has been like this: At first it was like the movie version of Titanic—everyone is just trying to hold on while the ship was going down, assured as it tipped that we will survive and right ourselves.
Travel Channel Seeks City’s Secret “Treasure”
Travel Channel’s “Expedition Unknown” show will air a feature on Milwaukee on Wednesday January 17th, at 8 p.m. Josh Gates, host of “Expedition Unknown,” visits Milwaukee in search of hidden treasure, specifically a ceramic cask buried in the city. In 2013, Urban Milwaukee writer Brian Jacobson shared this story of how Milwaukee’s secret treasure came to be. There is a treasure of sorts, a ceramic cask buried somewhere in Milwaukee.
How the Oil Barrel Became an Economic Concept
* * * The barrels finally changed in 1905, when Nellie Bly patented the steel drum still used today. Bly designed her barrels to carry more oil, 55 gallons, and to leak less. Her invention also caused the barrel’s meaning to separate from its physical reality. Despite adoption of the new, larger barrels, the old 42-gallon quantity remained the industry unit of measure for a “barrel”—as it still does. The barrels people used to hold oil were no longer the barrels they used to talk about it.
9 Reasons for the LGBTQ Community to Take Pride Online
Whenever I’m trying to make the argument that the internet is not all bad—or even all bad when it comes to kids—I invoke a hypothetical LGBTQ teen. This teen is growing up in a town or country where it’s risky to be out, and can’t count on family support, either. A generation ago, that teen would have lived for the day they could move to a big city, or at least to a country that isn’t actively repressing gay and trans rights.
Without Illusions: Jonathan Clarke Interviews Novelist, Critic, and Translator Tim Parks
TIM PARKS HAS HAD an unusual and prolific career, distinguishing himself in three separate areas of endeavor: as a novelist (he’s published 17 of them, including Europa, shortlisted for the Booker Prize in 1997); as a critic, essayist, and writer ?of several works of nonfiction (including Italian Ways, a drolly splenetic celebration of Italy’s public railways); and as a translator of Italian literature and translation theorist (his Translating Style is canonical in the field of translation...

The Mystery of the Germania Statue
Milwaukee metalsmith Cyril Colnik won world-wide fame for the incredible artistry he brought to railings, gates, candlesticks, chandeliers and more ornamental ironwork—work that can still be seen throughout the city in the Villa Terrace Museum, Pabst Mansion and City Hall.
