While the burden of red blood cell transfusions (RBC-Ts) has been stable among Australian patients with myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) and chronic myelomonocytic leukemia (CMML), the burden of platelet transfusions (PLT-Ts) has increased over time, according to a study published in the European Journal of Haematology. Across the entire cohort and study period, at a year post-diagnosis, patients had an average of 0.9 PLT-T admissions and 3.6 RBC-T admissions.
