He is the founding editor of Trail Runner magazine, and the former editor of Competitor. He is the author of "Kicksology: The Hype, Science, Culture and Cool of Running Shoes" and the co-author of "Run Like a Champion: An Olympian's Approach for Every Runner"

The French trail runner turned in a historic performance at the Hardrock 100 on Friday and Saturday in the heart of Colorado's most rugged mountain range, winning for the third year in a row in a course-record time of 21 hours, 11 minutes, and 36 seconds.

Brian Metzler Courtney Dauwalter turned in another dominant victory in the Hardrock 100 early on Saturday morning in Silverton, Colorado, breaking the previous clockwise course record. But she admitted that the last 30 miles were an enormous struggle for her. The Hardrock 100-miler is considered the most difficult ultradistance trail-running race in North America and one of the toughest in the world.

I spent the Fourth of July weekend running on rugged, high-altitude trails in the Mosquito Range east of Leadville, Colorado. The running was hard and often breathtaking, just like the views of numerous peaks towering above 13,000 feet. It would normally be an idyllic way to spend summer mornings, but my excitement was tempered by the massive, billowing column of smoke rising on the western horizon line in the Sawatch Range six miles west of Leadville.
